A New Simple Backpack is Here

The Zip Pack.  It’s a backpack - a simple one at that.  I tend to design bags that I would want to use and that are functional - a tote for transporting a laptop to work - a backpack for exploring a new city - a small zip pouch for carrying cards and cash for quick trips to the store.  I try to design something that caters to a certain need, and always keep in mind how others might use it as well.

I’ve wanted to design another backpack for a long time now.  I wanted something smaller that could serve two purposes - a carry on while traveling as well as a "purse" while out shopping or wandering around town.  I decided a backpack would be the perfect solution because, well, I just have a thing for backpacks lately, and my recent travels tell me that other people have a thing for them as well.  Using the Day Tote as a starting point {and months of field testing and revising}, the Zip Pack is here.

I thought it would be great to give some insight into this new design for all you backpack fans out there - so here goes...

The Zip Pack is specifically designed to be a simple bag with subtle details to make it more comfortable and easy to carry.

Designed for everyday use, it’s slightly smaller than the original Backpack and constructed with a combination of durable marine canvas (my current fave) and nylon lining - making it lightweight and water resistant inside and out.

I wanted to add double handles to make it easier when hand carrying and the handles are intentionally made shorter and positioned wider to prevent them from flopping over when carried on your back.  I think it makes for a cleaner look.

The shoulder straps are also set farther apart since I find it to be a more comfortable fit {less digging into your neck} and the positioning also helps with distributing the weight better, making the bag feel lighter on your back.

canvas backpack pockets

I am a pocket nerd and love everything to have its place.  I always find a way to add a few compartments in every design - this pack has six.  Inside you’ll find a large slip pocket for a tablet, magazines, up to a 13” laptop {or whatever else you want}, a smaller zipper pocket and slip, pockets to keep valuables hidden and a front zip pocket that’s great for stashing smaller items, like phone and keys, for quick access while on the go.

The main opening is wider for easy access and secured with a brass YKK zipper to keep everything in its place and safe inside.

I took this pack on my latest trip to Seattle for a pop-up market and it worked out perfectly as a carry on bag as well commuting to the show with everything I needed for the day.

I imagine someone packing this bag with a laptop, lunch, and an extra pair of shoes for commuting to work or filling it with daily essentials to be used as a catchall on a European vacation.
